The killing in Ferguson, a predominantly black city with a white-dominated power structure, underscores the sometimes tense nature of U.S. race relations. The St. Louis County grand jury's decision also led to protests in other major U.S. cities. The unrest came despite calls by President Barack Obama and others for police and protesters to exercise restraint.

The Midwestern U.S. town of Ferguson saw its worst unrest in months, after a grand jury decided not to indict a white police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black teenager.
Violent protests erupted late Monday after officials announced charges would not be filed against officer Darren Wilson for the August shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said at least a dozen buildings were set on fire, most of them destroyed. He said there were no reports of injuries.
At least 29 people were arrested.
"Those are businesses that may never come back. So, frankly, I'm heartbroken about that," Belmar said.
"Now the good news is we have not fired a shot. As far as I know, we don't have any serious injuries to police officers, they got banged up a little bit with rocks, one lieutenant from the patrol got hit in the head with a glass bottle, but we don't have any serious injuries, and as far as I know we haven't caused any serious injuries tonight," he said.
Earlier in the night, police used smoke and tear gas to disperse the protesters, some of whom set police cars on fire and threw objects at police.
Sporadic gunfire could be heard in the neighborhood. Demonstrations were also held in cities across America. At Times Square in New York City, protesters held signs decrying "police tyranny" and chanted the "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" slogan that has become popular at rallies against police violence. In Oakland and Chicago, protesters flooded freeways, blocking cars with their hands held in the air. A small crowd of protesters also gathered outside the White House. The August 9 shooting inflamed tensions in the predominantly black St. Louis suburb, which is patrolled by an overwhelmingly white police force.

Calling Brown's death a "tragedy," Holder said it is "far more must be done to create enduring trust" between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Stories differed as to what happened in the August 9 shooting.

Barack Obama Actions to Fix US Broken Immigration System
So here is the deal the President put forward tonight:
If you’ve been in America for more than five years; if you have children who are American citizens or legal residents; if you register, pass a criminal background check, and you’re willing to pay your fair share of taxes -- you’ll be able to apply to stay in this country temporarily, without fear of deportation. You can come out of the shadows and get right with the law.
Here is what this deal is not: Amnesty.
Amnesty is the immigration system we have now, in which millions of people live here without paying their taxes or playing by the rules, and politicians use this issue to scare and divide Americans.
That's the real amnesty -- leaving this broken system the way it is. Mass amnesty would be unfair. Mass deportation would be both impossible and contrary to our character. What I’m describing is accountability -- a common-sense, middle ground approach: If you meet the criteria, you can come out of the shadows and get right with the law. If you’re a criminal, you’ll be deported. If you plan to enter the U.S. illegally, your chances of getting caught and sent back just went up.
The best and most definitive way to fix the system is to pass comprehensive and common-sense immigration reform in Congress. Last year, 68 Democrats, Republicans, and independents in the Senate came together to do just that. That bipartisan bill would have doubled the number of Border Patrol agents; given undocumented immigrants a pathway to citizenship if they pay a fine, start paying taxes, and go to the back of the line; and boosted our economy while shrinking the deficit.
"What makes us Americans is our shared commitment to an ideal -- that all of us are created equal, and all of us have the chance to make of our lives what we will."
But more than 500 days later, Republicans in the House continue to block the bipartisan bill from a vote. "Had the House of Representatives allowed that kind of a bill a simple yes-or-no vote, it would have passed with support from both parties, and today it would be the law," the President noted.
So the President had to act, just as every president since President Eisenhower has over this last half century.
To those Members of Congress who question my authority to make our immigration system work better, or question the wisdom of me acting where Congress has failed, I have one answer: Pass a bill.
At the heart of the President's actions is a commitment to who we are as a nation. We are a nation that values families and works together to keep them together. We are a nation that educates the world's best and brightest, and encourages them to stay and create jobs here.
We are a nation that welcomes the tired, the poor, and the huddled weary who yearn to breathe free and build a better life for their children.
As the President said:
Scripture tells us that we shall not oppress a stranger, for we know the heart of a stranger -- we were strangers once, too.
My fellow Americans, we are and always will be a nation of immigrants.
We were strangers once, too. And whether our forebears were strangers who crossed the Atlantic, or the Pacific, or the Rio Grande, we are here only because this country welcomed them in, and taught them that to be an American is about something more than what we look like, or what our last names are, or how we worship. What makes us Americans is our shared commitment to an ideal – that all of us are created equal, and all of us have the chance to make of our lives what we will.

NASA's Swift Satellite - Astrophysics Mission
To date, Swift has detected more than 900 GRBs. Its discoveries include a new ultra-long class, whose high-energy emissions endure for hours; the farthest GRB, whose light took more than 13 billion years to reach us; and the "naked-eye" GRB, which for about a minute was bright enough to see with the naked-eye despite the fact that its light had traveled 7.5 billion years.
Early in the mission, Swift observations provided the "smoking gun" that validated long-standing theoretical models suggesting that GRBs with durations under two seconds come from mergers of two neutron stars, objects with the mass of the sun that have been crushed to the size of a city.
In addition to its studies of GRBs, Swift conducts a wide array of observations of other astrophysical phenomena. A flexible planning system enables astronomers to request Swift "target-of-opportunity" (TOO) observations, which can be commanded from the ground in as little as 10 minutes, or set up monitoring programs to observe specific sources at time intervals ranging from minutes to months. The system can schedule up to 75 independent targets a day.
"These characteristics make Swift a pioneer in a burgeoning field we call 'time-domain' astronomy," said Neil Gehrels, the mission's principal investigator at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. "Just as we extended telescopic astronomy from visible light to other wavelengths, we are now beginning to study how the properties of astronomical objects change across a wide range of timescales, from less than a second to decades."

Some projects require years of observations, such as long-term monitoring of the center of our galaxy -- and its dormant supermassive black hole -- with Swift's X-Ray Telescope (XRT). Astronomers also are using the spacecraft's Burst Alert Telescope to conduct a continuing survey of more than 700 active galaxies, where monster black holes devour large amounts of gas and shine brightly in X-rays and gamma rays.
Shorter-term projects included observations to map the nearest galaxies in the ultraviolet.
The most demanding object was the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small satellite galaxy orbiting our own at a distance of about 163,000 light-years. Swift's Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) captured 2,200 overlapping "snapshots" to cover the galaxy, producing the best-ever view in the UV. "The UVOT is the only telescope that can produce high-resolution wide-field multicolor surveys in the ultraviolet," said Michael Siegel, who leads the UVOT instrument team at Penn State.
Swift scientists discuss the mission, the science, and recall their personal experiences as members of the team.
In 10 years of operation, Swift has made 315,000 individual observations of 26,000 separate targets, supporting nearly 6,200 TOO requests by more than 1,500 scientists. Its observations range from optical and ultraviolet studies of comets and asteroids to catching X-rays and gamma-rays from some of the most distant objects in the universe.
Another major highlight of Swift's studies of some 300 supernovae was the 2008 discovery of X-ray signals produced by a star caught in the act of exploding. Shockwaves breaching the surface of the dying star produced this brilliant flash.
Swift rocketed into orbit on Nov. 20, 2004. Managed by NASA Goddard, the mission is operated in collaboration with Penn State, the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, and Orbital Sciences Corporation in Dulles, Virginia. Other partners include the University of Leicester and Mullard Space Science Laboratory in the United Kingdom, Brera Observatory and the Italian Space Agency in Italy, with additional collaborators in Germany and Japan.
Earlier this year, Swift ranked highly in NASA's 2014 Senior Review of Operating Missions and will continue its enormously productive scientific work through at least 2016.

4 Novembre: “Giorno dell’Unità Nazionale” e “Giornata delle Forze Armate”
Con la cerimonia dell'alzabandiera e la deposizione di una corona di alloro sulla Tomba del Milite Ignoto all'Altare della Patria da parte del Presidente della Repubblica Giorgio Napolitano, sono iniziate questa mattina le celebrazioni del 4 novembre, “Giorno dell'Unità Nazionale” e “Giornata delle Forze Armate”
Ad accompagnare il Capo dello Stato, oltre al Ministro della Difesa Roberta Pinotti, c’erano i Presidenti del Senato e della Camera, Pietro Grasso e Laura Boldrini, il Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri Matteo Renzi, il Presidente della Corte Costituzionale Giuseppe Tesauro e il Capo di Stato Maggiore della Difesa, Ammiraglio Luigi Binelli Mantelli e i Capi di Stato Maggiore delle Forze armate.
Alla cerimonia - che celebra il 96° anniversario della fine del primo conflitto mondiale e testimonia la vicinanza del Paese alle Forze Armate - hanno partecipato Autorità politiche, civili, religiose, Associazioni Combattentistiche e d’Arma ed hanno assistito numerosi cittadini.
Sulle note del Silenzio, il tradizionale sorvolo delle Frecce Tricolori.
Novità di quest’anno, l’inserimento all’interno della cerimonia della consegna delle onorificenze da parte del Presidente Napolitano.
Presenti tutti i reparti schierati in armi, il Presidente della Repubblica ha consegnato la Croce di Cavaliere dell’Ordine Militare d’Italia (OMI) alla Bandiera di guerra del 6° Stormo dell’Aeronautica Militare di Ghedi (Brescia) e la medaglia d’Oro al Valor Militare al Caporal Maggiore Capo dell’Esercito Andrea Adorno.
Successivamente, al Quirinale, nel salone dei Corazzieri, si è svolta la cerimonia di consegna da parte del Presidente della Repubblica, presente il Ministro della Difesa, delle onorificenze dell'Ordine Militare d'Italia (OMI).
Quattro i militari insigniti dell’onorificenza dell’OMI:
- Generale di Corpo d’Armata (EI) Vincenzo Lops
- Colonnello (GdF) Massimo Ricciardi
- Capitano di Corvetta (MM) Giuseppe Galeandro
- Maresciallo Aiutante sostituto Ufficiale Pubblica Sicurezza (CC) Lorenzo Masala
L’onorificenza costituisce un segno di riconoscimento per i militari che hanno dato sicure prove di senso di responsabilità, virtù militari ed umane nell’assolvere il proprio incarico. Quest’anno è stato assegnato per la prima volta anche a un militare della Guardia di Finanza.

Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo Crash - Spacecraft Explosion
Authorities in the western U.S. state of California say a space tourism rocket has crashed while on a test flight in the Mojave desert, killing one pilot and seriously injuring another.
Officials say the injured pilot ejected from the Virgin Galactic commercial spaceship before it crashed Friday. Television images showed parts of SpaceShipTwo scattered amid brush in the desert north of Los Angeles.
The CEO of Virgin Galactic -- founded by British billionaire Richard Branson -- said it will work with the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the accident. Branson said on Twitter that he is flying to California immediately.
The company plans to sell trips on SpaceShipTwo to the edge of space, about 100 kilometers above Earth. Passengers would have a few minutes of weightlessness before returning to Earth.
More than 500 people have already put down deposits to travel in the spacecraft.
Witnesses say the spacecraft crashed after it was released from a plane that carries it to a high altitude.
The chief executive of Virgin Galactic, George Whitesides, said space exploration is hard, but said the company will move forward.
"The future rests in many ways on hard days like this. We believe we owe it to the folks who were flying these vehicles as well as the folks who have been working so hard on them, to understand this and to move forward, which is what we'll do,'' said Whitesides.
It is the second accident suffered by a private U.S. space company this week. On Tuesday, an unmanned commercial rocket that was supposed to send a cargo ship to the International Space Station exploded seconds after liftoff from a NASA launch pad in the eastern state of Virginia.
