2015 Motogp Mugello Italy - Lorenzo Iannone Valentino Rossi

Jeorge Lorenzo wins the 2015 Motogp at Mugello, Italy; second position for Andrea Iannone (Ducati) and third Valentino Rossi (Yamaha).

Thousands of home fans of the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team gathered at the Autodromo del Mugello to see their dreams come true today. Not only did Jorge Lorenzo claim a flawless victory for the Gran Premio d'Italia, Yamaha’s fifth of the season, but their local hero Valentino Rossi also battled his way onto podium. He secured third in a hard fought race, making it his sixth consecutive podium.

After a flying start from second on the grid, Lorenzo tucked in behind Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso to quickly make his intentions clear. He moved up from third to lead the way when he crossed the line for the first time. With a clear track ahead of him, the race went exactly as he planned. As his pit board signaled rival Marc Marquez’s approach, he put the hammer down, setting a 1’47.700, the fastest lap of race.

He gradually built a gap and remained untouchable for the rest of the race. Riding consistent laps in the low 1’48s the Spaniard finished his perfect performance at the team’s home GP with a 5.563s advantage. This win is Lorenzo’s third win at the Mugello circuit in four years’ time.

Starting from eighth on the grid, teammate Rossi lost time when he got caught up in the pack and finished the first lap in ninth. He quickly made his way through the field, hunting for Cal Crutchlow riding in sixth and overtaking him on lap eight. It took The Doctor four laps to close down a 2.5s gap to the group battling for second place. He immediately passed Dovizioso for fifth and went on chasing Dani Pedrosa, Marquez and Iannone.

Rossi had his mind set on the podium and, having watched Marquez crash out, he was quick to make a move on Pedrosa for third. He pushed hard to close in on Iannone, setting a personal best of 1.48.173, but was unable to catch his compatriot and secured the last podium place, 6.661s from his teammate, accomplishing a third consecutive double podium for Yamaha.

Lorenzo’s 25 point score adds to his total of 112 points, keeping him in second position in the standings. He is six points behind teammate and championship leader Rossi, whose 16 points put him on 118 points.

ISIS News Ramadi & Palmyra Taken but No US Ground Troops to Iraq

White House news: No Plans to Send US Ground Troops to Iraq; Isis takes Ramadi and Palmyra.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Friday he could not corroborate Islamic State’s claims it was responsible for a blast at a Shi’ite mosque in the eastern Saudi Arabian governate of Qatif that killed at least 21 people.

“We obviously mourn the loss of life and condemn this violence," said Earnest. "The attribution, the determination about who is responsible, is still under review.”

A group describing itself as a newly-established IS affiliate claimed responsibility for the attack in Saudi Arabia. That attack and one at a mosque in the Yemeni capital Sana'a that wounded 13 Friday added to the growing number of casualties outside Islamic State's usual geographic targets in Syria and Iraq.

The attacks came on the heels of the Islamic State’s seizure of Ramadi, the capital of Iraq’s Anbar province, where some 1,300 U.S. service members were killed during the Iraq war. In neighboring Syria, the ancient city of Palmyra fell to IS militants Thursday.

Despite the loss of territory, the White House stood firm, announcing no changes in its strategy against the militant group, which consists of thousands of U.S.-led coalition airstrikes to back Iraqi forces on the ground.

“The president has clearly ruled out the use of U.S. military personnel in a ground combat role in Iraq," Earnest said. "And the reason for that is that we have an important lesson to learn from the previous invasion of Iraq.”

Earnest said President Barack Obama has been candid that the fight against the Islamic State will require a long-term, sustained commitment.

As for the goal of degrading the militant group, the White House spokesman said despite setbacks, based on the progress seen so far, the Islamic State will sustain additional losses in the next few years.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Jordan Friday, Iraq's Vice President Ayad Allawi was critical of the U.S. air campaign, portraying it as "failed" in terms of controlling the spread of the Islamic State.

"There are no good news from the international coalition, and there is no strategy, so I asked the Iraqi leaders to put a strategy together and to present it to the coalition." Allawi told reporters at Forum. "The international coalition meets but without any results, the airstrikes do not solve the problem."

Coalition forces conducted five airstrikes in Syria from Thursday to Friday; another 15 coalition bombings in Iraq focused on the IS stronghold of Mosul and the newly-captured city of Ramadi.

A spokesman for the Popular Mobilization units, the paramilitary group allied with Iraqi government troops, told AFP that a counter-offensive to retake the city will happen "in the coming days" with what he said would be "tens of thousands" of fighters.

Islamic State made further inroads toward its goal of creating a transnational caliphate on Friday, seizing the last border crossing between Syria and Iraq that was held by the Damascus government, according to the Britain-based monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights [SOHR].

The SOHR says the Syrian government now controls less than half the country.

Battle of Ramadi 2015 - Iraq War : ISIS Takes Control - Map Update

Iraq war news: ISIS takes the control of Ramadi after a bloody battle on 17 May, 2015. Update of the Islamic State maps.

The United States is promising to help Iraqi forces retake Ramadi from the Islamic State militant group, though officials worry the looming battles could play to the terror group’s advantage, win or lose.

On 17 May, it was reported that Ramadi fell to the complete control of ISIL insurgents, with the Iraqi Army and special forces employed as well as Iraqi Government officials filmed fleeing from the city escorted by tanks, with a total reported casualty of 500 civilians and security personnel.

Just days after saying the Islamic State was on the defensive across Iraq, the U.S. military Monday tried to downplay Ramadi’s fall, portraying it as a part of the ebb and flow of a “complex, bloody fight.”

“This is something that we’ve known is a possibility for some time,” said Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren.  “What this is means is that we now have to, along with our Iraqi partners, retake Ramadi.”

“There is no denying that this is indeed a setback,” White House spokesman Eric Schultz told reporters traveling with U.S. President Barack Obama Monday. “There is also no denying that we will help the Iraqis take back Ramadi.”

The U.S. refused to give any timeline for how long it would take to reclaim the city, 125 kilometers west of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, calling it an Iraqi decision, while the Pentagon emphasized the U.S. role would be limited to supplying air power to back-up Iraqi operations on the ground.

Officials said coalition aircraft were already seeking Islamic State targets in and around Ramadi, carrying out eight strikes in a 24-hour period ending Monday while noting 32 such strikes had been carried out over the past three weeks.

Still, U.S. defense officials warned the prospects of using air power to push back IS forces from Ramadi would be difficult, describing the urban battlefield as one that creates unique challenges.

There are also questions about the ability of the Iraqi Security Force.  A senior U.S. military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told VOA early indications were that Iraqi forces fled Ramadi despite having superior numbers.

And there have been ongoing concerns about Iraq’s inability to create “uninterrupted lines of defense” that would connect the patchwork of Iraqi forces positioned across Al-Anbar province.

For now, many of the Iraqi forces that fled Ramadi have regrouped on the city's eastern edge in what several sources tell VOA is an attempt to block any IS advance toward Baghdad.

At the same time, Shi'ite militias, some loyal to the Iraqi government and others loyal to Iran, have been converging on the outskirts of Ramadi, seeming to answer a call for support from Iraqi Prime Minster Haider al-Abadi, who met Monday with Iranian Defense Minister Gen. Hossein Dehghan.

It is the presence of those militia, many of them the same ones that fought to reclaim Tikrit last month, that have U.S. intelligence officials worried.

“It would not be surprising if ISIL sought to spotlight Shia forces fighting in the Ramadi area in an effort to inflame sectarian tensions, or question Baghdad’s intentions,” an intelligence official told VOA, using an acronym for the Islamic State.

The official also said it would not be surprising for IS “to mount a major attack or propaganda blitz to demonstrate its capabilities and attract additional recruits.”

Yet according to Michael Pregent, a former U.S. intelligence officer and military adviser in Iraq, developments in Ramadi and the arrival of the Iranian-backed Shi’ite militias could be setting the stage for the type of chaos on which the Islamic State thrives.

“The closer ISIS pushes to Baghdad, the more Baghdad looks sectarian and not supporting Sunnis,” he said, using a different acronym for the group. “This has the potential to turn into Sunni armed resistance, not against ISIS but Sunni armed resistance against its government and Shia militias, but not aligned to ISIS.”

“Unless Baghdad generates a Sunni-heavy force to fight ISIS now, I see it ceding western Baghdad to the traditional Sunni neighborhoods that al-Qaida had a lot of success in during 2005-2006, and this time there are not 120,000 Americans to stop it,” Pregent said.

Concerns about the potential for aggravated sectarian strife also reach to the top echelons of the Pentagon, where the top U.S. military officer called the situation in Ramadi “a serious setback.”

“Reducing sectarian tensions and preparing for reconstruction will continue to challenge the Government of Iraq," said Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman, Gen. Martin Dempsey.

Waco Texas Shooting at Twin Peaks Restaurant Cossacks Biker Gang

News video about the Waco Texas Shooting at Twin Peaks Restaurant between rival biker gangs one of them called Cossacks.
About 170 people are in police custody following a shootout between rival motorcycle gangs in Waco, Texas on Sunday.

Nine people were killed and at least 18 were wounded in the violence at the Twin Peaks restaurant. Zlatica Hoke reports those arrested face various criminal charges, including capital murder, which can carry the death penalty.
With nine people dead and nearly 20 injured, a gunbattle between rival motorcycle gangs in Waco, Texas on Sunday was one of the worst shoot-outs in recent U.S. history. The incident has focused attention on so-called biker gangs that law enforcement officials say pose a great threat to public safety.

The shoot-out in Waco was between members of a large Texas-based gang called the Bandidos and members of smaller gangs, one of which is called the Cossacks. Investigators recovered more than 100 guns on the scene and arrested around 170 people, according to Waco Police spokesman Sergeant Patrick Swanton.

“I will tell you that in 34 years in law enforcement, this is the worst crime scene, the most violent crime scene that I have ever been involved in," he said.

Swanton said authorities knew the gangs were assembling in Waco and tracked their movements closely, having a unit on hand at a restaurant to take action in case a fight broke out.

“We were extremely fortunate to have our best, most well-trained officers here. That was our tactical unit. They were here for the specific reason that we knew there was going to be trouble at this biker event," he said.

Swanton said the gang members also fired at police, but no one other than gang members was wounded or killed.

Federal and state authorities say the 2,000-member Bandidos gang is involved in drug smuggling and other types of organized crime.

The gang formed in south Texas in the 1960s and now has affiliated chapters around the United States and in several other countries.

Sociology professor James Quinn at the University of North Texas, who has studied biker gang group dynamics, says the character of gang chapters varies.

“You can have a chapter with some guys that are pretty sophisticated and into organized crime; you can have another one that is more on the misfit, riding, drinking, carousing types and sometimes you get a bit of both," he said.

Quinn said men also join these gangs for various reasons.

“A lot of them are looking for excitement and camaraderie and you have other people who are looking for opportunities to launch organized crime," he said.

Quinn and other experts on gangs say members are bound by an oath of loyalty to defend any member who is threatened by an outsider.

The primary rivals of the Bandidos are members of the even larger, California-based gang, known as the Hell’s Angels. Both have international affiliates and there have been violent clashes between them in Australia, western Europe and Canada, according to Julian Sher, a Canadian journalist who has written two books about the biker gangs.

“More than 160 people were killed, most of them biker gang members, but some civilians, when the Bandidos and the Hell’s Angels fought it out on the streets of the province of Quebec [1994-2002]. The Bandidos and the Hell’s Angels fought it out in Europe for control of the drug trade there. So the Bandidos have a long history of violence," he said.

Sher said there may be a lull in violence following the Waco shooting, but he says eventually the gangs will clash again.

“The image of the biker gangs never changes. This is what they are about. This is their very nature and it was just pure luck that no innocent people were killed in that shoot-out, but there have been cases in which innocent people have been killed," he said.

Most of the people arrested in Waco are members of the Bandidos, and authorities there remain concerned that other members could come to town and clash with members of rival groups who are still in the city.

Both Texas state investigators and federal agents are on scene to assist in the investigation of the crime, and authorities say they have taken precautions to deal with any further disruption of the peace.

Lorenzo Wins 2015 Le Mans MotoGp - Valentino Rossi 2th Yamaha

After an amazing victory in Jerez, Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider Jorge Lorenzo dominated the MotoGP field for a second time in a row, taking a sensational victory at the Monster Energy Grand Prix de France. Valentino Rossi also showed a blistering pace in the French sunshine at the Le Mans Bugatti Grand Prix race circuit. He claimed a strong second place and his fifth podium finish of the season.

Lorenzo was strong right from the beginning of the 28 lap sprint.

Starting from third on the grid, he shot off the line to take second into the first turn and move into the lead going into the second corner. Followed by Andrea Dovizioso, he completed the first lap with already nearly half a second advantage over his rivals.

With clear track in front of him, the double premier class World Champion put the hammer down and rode consistently fast lap times in the 1’33s to manage a gap of half a second. Completely in control, Lorenzo remained unchallenged for the rest of the race.

Leading from the first lap until the chequered flag, the Spaniard claimed his second consecutive victory by 3.820s, with only his teammate besting his fastest lap of 1’33.004.

Teammate Rossi thoroughly enjoyed today’s racing action, fighting his way up the order from his seventh place grid position. The Doctor had a good start and quickly moved into fifth position to hunt down Marc Marquez, passing him with a brilliant move on his third lap.

The nine-time world champion then set his sights on Andrea Iannone and increased his pace, posting a 1’32.879, the fastest lap of the race. With 18 laps to go Rossi made the audience cheer as he took third place and immediately put his next target, Andrea Dovizioso, under pressure.

Displaying some very clever racing, he lined his rival up and made his move at end of the fourteenth lap. Unable to close in on his teammate, who had a gap of more than 1.8s, Rossi focused on managing his advantage over Dovizioso and took a well-deserved second.

Lorenzo’s first place earns him 25 points, while Rossi’s fifth podium of the year adds 20 points to his score.

These results put The Doctor on 102 points, keeping him in the lead for the championship, with teammate Lorenzo moving up to second in the championship with a 87 points total.

Amtrak Train Crash - Philadelphia Derailment

The passenger train that derailed late Tuesday in Philadelphia may have been traveling at more than 100 miles per hour (160 kph), at least twice the posted speed limit, and the engineer applied full emergency brakes moments before the derailment, U.S. officials said.

Officials have not determined a cause for the derailment, which killed at least seven people and injured another 200, at least six critically, but the National Transportation Safety Board was focusing Wednesday on the train's speed.

The Federal Railroad Administration said the posted speed limit was 70 mph just before the curve and 50 mph on the curve.

The engineer of the seven-car Amtrak Northeast Regional train en route from Washington to New York, whose identity has not been disclosed, survived the accident, but he has refused to talk to police.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said the engineer was injured "to some extent" and received treatment.

Nutter said a search team found the train's black box in the twisted wreckage. It holds key data that could help investigators determine the cause of the derailment, including the train's speed and other technical information.

The black box was taken to Amtrak's operations center in Delaware for examination.

Officials said an unknown number of the 243 passengers and crew aboard the train remained missing or unaccounted for, although some of them may have left the scene uninjured.

Nutter called the crash scene "an absolute disastrous mess. I've never seen anything like this in my life."

President Barack Obama said he and his wife, Michelle, were "shocked and deeply saddened" by the accident.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of those we lost last night, and to the many passengers who today begin their long road to recovery," he said. "As we work to determine exactly what happened, I commend the fire, police and medical personnel working tirelessly and professionally to save lives.

"Along the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak is a way of life for many," Obama said. "From Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia to New York City and Boston, this is a tragedy that touches us all.

"  The U.S. Naval Academy said one of its students who was on leave and on his way home was among those killed. The Associated Press said one of its staff members was also killed.

Many stunned and bleeding passengers were able to escape after the crash, while others found themselves trapped until emergency crews were able to cut through the wreckage and pull them to safety.

More than 140 people were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

One of the passengers, former U.S. Representative Patrick Murphy of Pennsylvania, said he was sitting in the cafe car when it began to topple, throwing passengers on the left side of the car "completely over to the right side."

Murphy took photos of the wreckage and rescue operations and sent them out via Twitter.

'Like someone had slammed the brake'

An Associated Press manager, Paul Cheung, was on the train and said he was watching Netflix when “the train started to decelerate, like someone had slammed the brake. …

Then suddenly you could see everything starting to shake. You could see people's stuff flying over me.”

Cheung said another passenger urged him to escape from the back of his car, which he did. He said he saw passengers trying to escape through the windows of cars tipped on their sides.

“The front of the train is really mangled,” he said. “It's a complete wreck. The whole thing is like a pile of metal.'”

Gaby Rudy, 18, of Livingston, New Jersey, was headed home from George Washington University when the derailment occurred. She said she was nearly asleep when she suddenly felt the train “fall off the track.”

The next few minutes were filled with broken glass and smoke, said Rudy, who suffered minor injuries. “They told us we had to run away from the train in case another train came."

Another passenger, Daniel Wetrin, was among more than a dozen people taken to a nearby elementary school afterward.

“I think the fact that I walked off [the train] kind of made it even more surreal, because a lot of people didn't walk off,” he said. “I walked off as if, like, I was in a movie.

Philadelphia Amtrak Train Crash - 5 Dead: Accident After Derailment

Accident after the derailment of an Amtrak train near Philadelphia: 5 dead in the crash.
Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia said five people were killed when a commuter train derailed outside the city late Tuesday night.

Multiple emergency units responded when the Amtrak train carrying at least 243 passengers and crew went off the tracks during a trip from Washington, D.C. to New York City.

Nutter said six cars and the train's engine were involved in the crash, which he described to reporters as an "absolute, disastrous mess."

More than 200 firefighters and police officers swarmed the darkened crash site with flashlights searching for any passengers who may be trapped in the wreckage. Television footage showed many passengers covered with blood. Six passengers were critically injured.

Animated Google Doodle - Earth's Inner Core : Inge Lehmann

Seismologist Inge Lehmann celebrated by an animated Google Doodle. Inge Lehmann ForMemRS (May 13, 1888 – February 21, 1993) was a Danish seismologist and geophysicist who discovered the Earth's inner core.
In 1936, she postulated from existing seismic data that the Earth's core is not a single molten sphere, but that an inner core exists, which has physical properties that are different from those in the outer core.

This conclusion was quickly accepted by seismologists, who up to this time had not been able to propose a workable hypothesis for the observation that the P-wave created by earthquakes slowed down when it reached certain areas of the inner Earth.
